Oyu Tolgoi is committed to human development and education, organising a wide range of programmes and projects such as building schools, awarding scholarships and jointly designing the tertiary curriculum with the local universities. We provide educational opportunities for both high school and tertiary students. Since 2010, over 3,600 students have enrolled in Oyu Tolgoi’s educational programmes and received various scholarship opportunities.
We are pleased to announce five different scholarship programmes for the 2021-2022 academic year, and will award 78 students in total. The applications will open on 15 September and close on 15 October.
- Domestic scholarship – This full scholarship is available for second to fourth-year tertiary students enrolling in mining courses in Mongolian universities. Since 2011, 345 students have received this scholarship. The scholarship fully covers tuition costs and provides a monthly stipend, and if the awardee hails from a rural area, the student is entitled to accommodation fees. The awardees will also be provided with the opportunity to enrol in the Youth Development Programme for personal development. Twenty students will be awarded this year.
- Geotechnical scholarship – A new scholarship being run as part of the joint programme by Oyu Tolgoi and the Mongolian National University of Science and Technology. The purpose of this programme is to prepare globally competitive geotechnical engineers capable of planning and executing geotechnical works and monitoring and mitigating geotechnical risks. Five students will be awarded this year.
- Graduate Excellence Path – Rio Tinto group-level programme provides opportunities for newly graduated students to gain experience and learn skills while working with professionals in the field. A total of 140 students have participated in this programme. The four-year programme provides an opportunity for awardees for becoming leading professionals. We will select three more graduates this year.
- Youth Development Programme – It is designed to upskill high school students. To date, 1,170 students have participated in this programme. We are rewarding 50 students this year. Awardees will participate in personal development training for eight weeks and design and implement projects in a team setting.
