Oyu Tolgoi and Rio Tinto awarded 31 students scholarships today reaffirming its vision, “Natural resources to enduring value, knowledge and skill” for Mongolia. The company has provided scholarships and other educational benefits to over 3,600 students through its tailored leadership and career development programmes since 2010.
Oyu Tolgoi scholarship consists of full academic year tuition, monthly allowance and living expenses for rural students. It also has the advantage to grow and develop as young professionals through our “Youth Development Programme”.
We have awarded scholarships to 22 students to study in local universities and to nine students who are majoring in the Geotechnical Programme in the Mongolian University of Science and Technology (MUST) which is a partnership programme with the university, Oyu Tolgoi and Rio Tinto Mongolia. The programme was launched in 2021 under a Memorandum of Understanding between Oyu Tolgoi, Rio Tinto and the Mongolian University of Science and Technology to prepare globally competitive geotechnical engineers with USD2.7 million. As part of this partnership, a mine research grant programme was announced this year to support research to improve the productivity, sustainability and safety of mine operations. The research grant programme will be implemented between 2021-2025 with a total budget of MNT2.5 billion to invest in mining research. In the first year, we received 13 research project proposals and the following four projects have been approved for funding.
– Methodology for determining the impact of subsidence on the surface at the intersection of mining with the surface using an electromagnetic tomography device
– Improving the methodology for assessing the strength and reliability of concentrator metal structures
– A study of a human location system based on an inertial sensor in a GPS-free environment in an underground mine
– Underground crack permeability structure
