– Transwest Mongolia recognised as best Oyu Tolgoi supplier for local content optimisation –
For several years, Mongolian mining companies have been purchasing machinery and equipment from global companies. Historically, there was sometimes a lack of qualified personnel to run these machines, so equipment suppliers have been developing training programmes for the workforce of their customers. One of these companies is Transwest Mongolia.
Until recently, Mongolians did not know how to operate big trucks aside from the Soviet made Zil-130. Today, young Mongolians are learning to operate the giant, 290 tonnes capacity heavy trucks used in modern mining. Training people to use such big machinery requires fully equipped and up to date training facilities. In 2012, Transwest Mongolia opened a fully certified training centre. The centre includes a 2,000 square metres laboratory, training hall and 1,000 square metres practice area. Using these modern facilities, the company is training its customers’ personnel through a vocational programme. The company is also working closely with a number of universities.
The company currently employs around 300 people, who are highly trained, not only in Mongolia, but in Komatsu plants in Japan and the USA.
Thanks to Transwest Mongolia, many young people have gained professional skills and knowledge, improving their confidence and gaining opportunities to work for world class mining companies. In recognition of this, Oyu Tolgoi awarded Transwest Mongolia with the award for supporting local economic development at the 2012, Gobi Gem, Supplier Recognition Awards.
As well as 135 other clients, the company has worked with Oyu Tolgoi since 2010. As part of its corporate responsibility programme it has made several donations of money and equipment to an orphanage and a development centre for children with cerebral palsy.
