Press release: Oyu Tolgoi supports personal development in the Umnugobi

30 new students enrolled in the scholarship programme

Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia – Oyu Tolgoi is implementing its scholarship programme in the South Gobi region for the eighth consecutive year. Recently, students for the 2012-2013 school year were selected for the programme. Thirty new students received an Oyu Tolgoi scholarship which includes both school tuition fees and dormitory payments through graduation.

The objective of the scholarship programme is to support local development by providing financial assistance for students in the Umnugobi who are interested in studying relevant topics and returning to their communities to work after graduation.

Janet Reark, Oyu Tolgoi Principal Advisor for Community Relations and Social Performance, handed scholarship certificates to the selected students on 1 August. During the ceremony, a 'Success Story' exhibition was held for the 30 recipients of the Oyu Tolgoi scholarship programme.

Eighteen of the thirty students are from Dalanzadgad, the capital of the Umnugobi and twelve are from Bayan-Ovoo, Khanbogd, Gurvantes, Bayandalai, Bulgan, Khankhongor, Tsogt-Ovoo and Tsogttsetsii soums. These students will focus their studies in petrology, business, economy, medical science, mining, food production, IT systems management, natural environment, construction and journalism among other disciplines.
