Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia – To celebrate ‘World Water Day’ on 22 March, Oyu Tolgoi organised a competition among students and Facebook users to find water saving ideas.
This is the third year the company has held the ‘Water is a Precious Treasure’ contest. Many young Mongolians participated in the contest, submitting their ideas to save water and their proposals to promote these ideas.
The contest was judged on two levels. Firstly by the public, ten proposals receiving the most ‘Likes’ on the Oyu Tolgoi Facebook page were selected. Secondly, the Oyu Tolgoi Social Investment department and winners’ selection committee reviewed the 10 best project proposals and made a decision.
The following project proposals were selected as the best of the best: ‘Water saving solution’ by O.Oigon-Erdene, ‘Let’s use greywater for domestic activities’ by team of E.Batbileg, ‘Best idea to save water’ by team of Kh.Batsumberel. The winners will promote their water saving ideas and initiatives to the public through their own Facebook page and the Oyu Tolgoi Facebook page.
O.Oigon-Erdene, student at the Mongolian University of Science and Technology:
I submitted my idea on the solution of saving water. My first idea is to reduce water consumption and use it efficiently. The main idea is to recycle the greywater used in sinks and showers for the toilet.
J.Munkh-Erdene student at the Mongolian University of Science and Technology:
Our idea is to reduce volume of water used for showers to save water. Another idea from our team is to replace the sink valve and shower tip with water efficient pressure tips. This way, it is possible save 40-50 per cent of the water.
Z.Bulgan student at the Mongolian University of Science and Technology:
The main idea for our team is to recycle greywater used in households for the toilet. Our country uses so much water in toilets leading to water becoming expensive. Therefore, this idea is very timely.
