– Mine employees actively take part in a blood donation event –
Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia – According to WHO data, if three per cent of the general population of the country donates blood regularly, the country’s blood donation needs are fully met. When hospitals have a sufficient supply of blood, it’s possible to save human lives. So employees of Oyu Tolgoi are helping by donating their blood.
Oyu Tolgoi organised the event 'Oyu Tolgoi Employees Joining the Ranks of Blood Donors', in partnership with the Mongolian Red Cross Society and the National Center for blood donation and blood research.
On 22 and 23 April, a mobile team of 16 staff members of the National Center visited the Oyu Tolgoi mine site, over 200 Oyu Tolgoi employees donated blood. The blood from these employees met all the relevant requirements and can now be used to save the lives of up to 600 people.
B.Gantulga, a specialist from the Oyu Tolgoi health department in charge of hospital issues said, “we visited 14 departments and units, over 10 days, promoting the importance of donating blood. Oyu Tolgoi employees gained knowledge and an understanding about donating blood. Although the timing was tight, our mine employees actively participated in blood donation process.”
Over the last few years, Oyu Tolgoi has been supporting this type of cause. Last year, Oyu Tolgoi sponsored the campaign, 'Don’t Mind Helping to Save Lives', for World Blood Donor Day.
