Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia – Khanbogd soum of the Umnugobi region leads the country in many things. The soum boasts the highest number of camels and the highest employment rate in Mongolia. The soum was also the first in the region to establish an elders’ committee, 13 years ago.
Last Saturday, the elders of the soum were very excited to be opening their new community house. This is a centre for elders to visit, share their stories and socialise with each other. The spacious house, 12 metres in diameter, was constructed using Canadian log-house technology and financed by the provincial and county government for 35 million MNT and 13 million MNT each.
Oyu Tolgoi Community Relations staff, the Governor of the Khanbogd soum, representatives of the local council and more than 120 elders of Khanbogd, participated in the opening ceremony. Oyu Tolgoi have pledged to develop a garden and parkland on the five hectare area in front of the house. Oyu Tolgoi also donated exercise equipment for the elders’ committee community house.
Last Sunday, Oyu Tolgoi managers invited the elders to visit the project site and organised a tour of the mine, a cultural performance and lunch. The local elders said they were very impressed with the Oyu Tolgoi site and development.
Considered a very active group in the country, Khanbogd elders’ committee organise trade fairs to sell handicrafts made by elders and celebrate many holidays, including Lunar New Year, Women’s day, Military Day, Nadam festival and New Year.
