Press release: Instilling good traffic safety culture in children

Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia – In recent years Umnugobi aimag has witnessed rapid growth in both mining development and population. This growth is causing an increase in the numer of vehicles on the roads in the community, affecting the safety of local children. To increase road safety awareness a contest for the best poster and leaflet promoting road safety was announced among the children of Khanbogd, Dalanzadgad, Manlai and Bayan-Ovoo soums in Umnugobi aimag.

Co-organised by the Mongolian National ECPAT Network and Oyu Tolgoi LLC’s Community Relations and Social Performance Department for the “Together for Right Habit” programme, the contest aims to instill good traffic safety, knowledge and skills.

Khanbogd soum school students, O.Soninbold, N.Enkhtuya, O.Lkhagvasuren; Khanbogd soum school students, B.Oyuntuya, B.Altanchimeg and Manlai soum school student, B.Munkhtuul, won medals in the categories of poster and leaflet respectively. Khanbogd soum school student, O.Lkhagvasuren, who took 2nd place in the poster contest, shared: 'Dear Oyu Tolgoi employees, thank you very much for increasing active traffic involvement in Khanbogd and building such a beautiful road. My drawing shows that exceeding 10 mph speed limit is prohibited in the ger district'.

Oyu Tolgoi LLC’s Local Relations and Social Peformance Department officer, N. Ariunaa, said: ”This contest was organised supporting the ‘Let’s Listen to Children’ nation-wide campaign announced by the government agency, National Authority for Children. The children took an active part in the contest and sent a total of 116 posters and 18 leaflets. Let me convey my special thanks to all the trainers of the ‘Right – Duty – Participation’ project in all soums, who took an active part in organisation of the contest. Particularly to the Umnugobi aimag Governor’s Office officer, T.Munguntuul; Khanbogd soum Secondary school social worker, L.Gantuya; art and labour education teacher, O.Azjargal and Bayan-Ovoo soum police representative, A.Khuder-Erdene.”
