National Police Agency and Oyu Tolgoi extends Road safety partnership for safer roads

Road traffic accidents are one of the leading causes of death in
Mongolia. That’s why Oyu Tolgoi and the National Police Agency are
extending its joint partnership for the second consecutive year to
implement evidence-based interventions that have proven to reduce road
traffic fatalities and injuries, with a focus on rural intercity roads.
This year, the campaign focuses on passengers, specifically on the role
that passengers must play to re-inforce safe driving.

The partnership

  • In
2019, the National Police Agency, Mobicom and Oyu Tolgoi successfully
initiated and organized road safety campaigns, “No Need to Rush” and
“Play by the Rules”, which has resulted in a year-on-year reduction in
the number of traffic accidents by 14.2 per cent across the country,
according to the National Police Agency statistics.
  • A high
speed monitoring system was installed on the Choir, Govisumber
provincial road where most intercity accidents were recorded which also
contributed to the reduction of accidents.

Coming together for good

Public
and private institutions coming together can make great progress on
national issues such as road safety. Armando Torres, CEO of Oyu Tolgoi,
shared: “Safety is a way we work and live for the Oyu Tolgoi family. By
partnering with the National Police Agency for the second year, we will
continue to share our world class safety culture and contribute to the
safety and well-being of all, which is becoming even more important
during COVID-19”.

Road safety is still one of the greatest
safety risks, especially for the young. Safer roads are achievable with
evidence-based interventions and public and private partnerships. No
loss of life is acceptable if it’s preventable.

The 2020 Road
Safety Campaign, named “No Need to Rush – 2”, is being implemented
between July 1 – August 15, which is a period of high domestic travel
inevitably leading to increased road traffic accidents.

Oyu Tolgoi

identified road safety as one of its two main corporate social

responsibility’s priorities [for 2020] taking into consideration the

increasing number of fatalities and injuries happening across the

country due to road traffic incidents. Another priority is the ‘Ger

school health’ project, which will be implemented in Songinokhairkhan

district of Ulaanbaatar city starting from 2020/2021 academic year.
