Steffan Herselman was appointed as the General Manager of Underground Operations at Oyu Tolgoi in September 2023. He is a highly experienced leader in underground operations, having worked extensively in Australia and South Africa. Beginning his career at AngloGold’s Western Deep Levels, Steffan further spent 15 years with Anglo American and De Beers, where he held diverse roles at the Venetia operation, transitioning from open pit to underground projects, and worked on the Finsch Mine and Cullinan Mine block cave operations.
Prior to Rio Tinto, Steffan served as the Chief Mining Engineer for five years at the underground project within the Brisbane Copper Technical team. He has played a pivotal role in supporting the development of “Oyu Tolgoi” Underground mine, guiding it from its initial project stages to its successful transition into full operations.
He holds a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Johannesburg in Mining Engineering.
