Kern von Hagen, D.Orgilmaa awarded with education sector’s order and honorary title

Kern Von Hagen, Manager in Oyu Tolgoi’s Talent Pipeline Department, was awarded with the highest award of the Mongolian Senior Teachers’ Association – Order of “Teacher’s Merit,” and Talent Pipeline department superintendent D.Orgilmaa was awarded with the honorary title “Honorary education sector service worker” on 14 October, 2014. They were awarded these honours in recognition of their valuable contributions to the development and reform of Mongolian’s education sector.

Kern has been working at Oyu Tolgoi for three years and, in this time, he has worked successfully on many large projects, such as an international and domestic scholarships programme, the establishment of new schools, a youth development programme, and a pre-apprenticeship programme. D.Orgilmaa has been working in Oyu Tolgoi’s Training department since 2011. She has participated in many projects and programmes, such as training teachers for technical and vocational education and training centres, construction of new TVET centres and extensions to existing schools and an apprenticeship programme.

Both received their awards at the opening ceremony of the Polytechnic College in Dalanzadgad. This facility for 180 engineering and trade students includes a new classroom building and a dormitory for 108 students, as well as a power substation. Oyu Tolgoi spent US$3.5 million on this project, and Kern and Orgilmaa were key contributors to the successful completion of the project. The facility was transferred to the local community during the ceremony.

In June 2010, Oyu Tolgoi and the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science signed a Memorandum of Understanding to develop vocational training and education. Over five years, we are spending US$126 million, building and renovating technical colleges across the country and funding training in mining and related fields for thousands of Mongolians.
