Oyu Tolgoi’s hydro geologists discover three large underground aquifers with plentiful reserves to provide the mine’s water needs. The Gunii Hooloi aquifer is just 35km from the Oyu Tolgoi site and contains more than 6.8 billion cubic metres of water, lying 70-400m beneath the ground. The water’s high mineral and saline content means it is not suitable for domestic consumption but ideal for industrial purposes.
