Brand new facilities at the Umnogovi aimag Polytechnical College opened today, expanding learning facilities for 180 engineering and trade students.
The new teaching building, together with a dormitory for 108 students, has been funded by Oyu Tolgoi under its commitment to support vocational training across the country. The new Dalanzadgad facility is equipped with classrooms and practical training rooms containing pneumatic, hydraulic, electric, and welding equipment and machinery.
During the ceremony, Kern von Hagen, Oyu Tolgoi’s Talent Pipeline Manager said “Today’s event demonstrates Oyu Tolgoi’s commimtent to education, not only at this school, but through many other initiatives and programmes.
“I am confident that in the future, this facility will educate many young people to become international standard professionals.”
L.Batchuluun, Chairman of the Citizen’s Representatives Council of the South Gobi aimag said “The expansion of the Polytechnical college and the construction of the dormitory by Oyu Tolgoi is an event of historic significance for the South Gobi aimag.”
In 2010, Oyu Tolgoi and the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop vocational training and education. Under the MoU, Oyu Tolgoi is committed to financing the establishment of two mining focused training centres and upgrading four existing educational establishments. The improved facilities will also benefit from updated equipment and curriculums. Oyu Tolgoi has already constructed a Mining School of Excellence in Nalaikh and upgraded and expanded TVET centres in Dalanzadgad, Choir and Darkhan. In addition, training equipment has been provided to several regional centres.
