The opportunity

We are looking for one ( 1) Lead Project Geologist in Oyu Tolgoi Underground Mining – Geoscience department based at Oyu Tolgoi mine site and Ulaanbaatar office 50/50 bases.

The primary purpose of this role is support the management by coordinating drilling activities at Oyu Tolgoi, while ensuring that Rio Tinto standards and Health, Safety, Environment, Quality Management System (HSEQMS) is always adhered to. The incumbent will be managing drilling activities among several OT operations (Underground, Open Pit, Tailings, and Exploration) interacting with the leaders of the respective teams. Yet another aspect of this role is to build and maintain strong working relationships with the drilling contractor’s managers and on-site personnel to ensure timely recognition of issues and provision of solutions. The Drilling Specialist will utilize his/her expertise in drilling techniques to ensure that Oyu Tolgoi team employ the best drilling practices with emphasis on safety, drill core quality, productivity, and drilling performance.

What the role entails

  • Provide drilling safety leadership to ensure the delivery of safe and environmentally responsible work and an incident-free workplace. Use safety systems and available resources to support the high-risk activities undertaken by the drilling contractor.
  • Improve Resource Development safety performance by identifying gaps and developing documented process improvements for inclusion in the HSEC (health, safety, environment, and community) risk registers.
  • Allocate resources effectively, considering manpower, equipment, and materials required for different drilling operations to minimize unplanned drill rig downtime and standby and maximize drill rig availability and utilization.
  • Collaborate with other functional groups to achieve production milestones in line with requirements.
  • Ensure compliance of all drilling operations to statutory, aviation safety and the Rio Tinto HSEQMS requirements. Develop and administer contract audit tools to ensure uniformity and conformance.
  • Prepare reports required for the statutory reporting of plans, activities & rehabilitation carried out by Oyu Tolgoi and drilling contractor for obtaining licenses, land use rights, etc.
  • Supervision, coaching and mentoring to support staff to ensure quality and team effectiveness.
  • Interact with the broader mining and support services team to secure necessary support and resources to the overall project.
  • Deliver within the work areas to achieve individual and organizational success through collaboration and understanding and embracing the values (Safety, Technical, Exchange, People, Success)
  • Maintain a high degree of professionalism and business ethics.
  • Develop understanding around key mineral resource and production requirements of Oyu Tolgoi in order to contribute to strategy within the district.

What you will need for this role

  • Geology Undergraduate or equivalent or higher education obtained through degrees or diplomas from academic college or Universities.
  • Geology, and five (+3) years of experience managing drilling programs.
  • Underground previous mining experience preferred.
  • Have high oral and written English skills.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and office applications is an advanatge.
