The opportunity

We are looking for one ( 1) Geotechnical Engineer in Oyu Tolgoi LLC – Technical and Integrated Planning – Mine Technical Services department based at Oyu Tolgoi mine site with roster 14 days on and 14 days off.

The primary purpose of this site-based role involves collecting and analysing geotechnical data for outcomes targeted by the Geotechnical Superintendent and Lead Geotechnical Engineers. Development of reporting skills will be required as this role progresses. Work completed in this role has impacts on both the short and long term success of Oyu Tolgoi and it is critical that work is completed in a safe, professional and timely manner.

What the role entails

  • The main responsibilties of the geotechnical engineer is to assist in all aspects of geotechnical programmes relating to Operation delivery
  • Geotechnical face mapping, logging and photogrammetry
  • Stability assessments, rock mass assessments and develop alternative slope hazard mitigation requirements as required or instructed
  • Ensure mine designs and the implementation of mine designs complies with the Slope/Dump Management Plan
  • Coordinate the collection of rock samples for testing, including site selection and sample preparation under guidance from the Geotechnical Superintendent or Senior Geotechnical Engineer
  • Assist in the review and update of the Slope/Dump Management Plan under direction from the Geotechnical Superintendent or Senior Geotechnical Engineer
  • Contribute to the installation, commissioning, and maintenance of all geotechnical monitoring systems, such that they provide accurate and timely information for all mining activities and ensure the stability of the pit excavation
  • Provide QA/QC on all data collection and maintain databases
  • Assist the Senior Geotechnical Engineer with contractor management through the supervision of drill and sampling crews using standard work procedures as directed
  • Identify best practice through experience, diverse learning opportunities, and accepting guidance and mentorship from the Geotechnical Superintendent or Senior Geotechnical Engineer, and
  • Managing all HSEC related activities by anticipating current and future risks and setting and monitoring objectives to ensure standards are met.
  • As a Geotechnical Engineer at the Oyu Tolgoi Open Pit, you will also be required to fulfill other responsibilities which relate to the focus areas of collaboration, people, strategic effectiveness and projects, systems and processes
  • Put safety first in all work to achieve safe production and act as a role model in demonstrating and living the OT green behaviours
  • Interaction, pre-task risk assessment & performance management work
  • Ensure incidents are report

What you will need for this role

  • Undergraduate or equivalent or higher education obtained Geoscience or equivalent. A qualification in geotechnical engineering and/or discipline relevant to the mining
  • Demonstrated previous experience operating in an Open Pit environment will be looked upon preffered
  • Can process the works along safety standards and procedures
  • Developed soft skills including teamwork and communication skills
  • The role requires intermediate and/or above intermediate English skill
