The opportunity

We are looking for one (1) Geophysicist in Oyu Tolgoi LLCResources & Systems Department based Oyu Tolgoi Site with 14 days on and 14 days off. This role is 1-years fixed term contract.

The purpose of this site-based role is to assist in delivering outcomes that targeted by Resources & Systems Department. These outcomes are largely a provision of collection of geophysical data inputs and their interpretation into the development of geological and geotechnical models. The role will need to understand and operate a range of geophysical computer programs used to interpret surface and borehole data. The role is primarily responsible for the timely picking, processing, classification and reporting of Geophysical data with a strong emphasis on Acustic Televiewer data.

What the role entails:

  • Data acquisition in the surface holes using a range of tools including acoustic televiewer, caliper, and natural gamma probes etc. and ensure quality control of the downhole logging data
  • Data acquisition in the horizontal and uprising drillholes of the Underground Mine using optical televiewer and ensure quality control of data.
  • Undertake data processing, analyses, interpretation and quality control of geophysical borehole logging data.
  • Produce a final geophysical summary log of the data and link with geological and geotechnical logs for input into the overall modeling.
  • Assist the Senior Geophysics in final reporting and final interpretation of geophysical borehole logging results.
  • Assist in the collection, collation, quality control and interpretation of ground geophysical datasets as they relate to exploration and geological mapping. Participate in target generation work through contributing to discussion and recommending on appropriate geophysical techniques and applications.
  • Participate in reviews and presentations of potential projects.
  • Build a working knowledge of systems that ensure that geophysical data and documents are properly managed throughout the geophysical investigation and that the most updated and complete version is stored in an accessible and secure infrastructure.
  • Identify best practice through experience, diverse learning opportunities, and develop work processes to implement such best practices.
  • Actively participate in all HSEC related activities and demonstrate commitment to established standards through actions of self and encouraging positive behavior in others.

What you will need for this role

  • Bachelor or higher degree in Geophysics or equivalent.
  • At least 5 years of relevant experience, or otherwise the significant practical experience and on the job training.
  • Developing a robust use of WellCAD software is a requisite of the role.
  • AcQuire (geological database knowledge), and an understanding of geotechnical logging, geological logging, and modern drilling technologies and practices is essential.
  • Membership of professional geological and mining societies such as SEG, ASEG, EAGE, IMM, AusIMM is strongly encouraged.
