The opportunity
We are looking for One (1) Engineer Functional Safety in Oyu Tolgoi LLC – Asset Management Department based Ulaanbaatar office and Oyu Tolgoi Site with 14 days on and 14 days off.
In this role, you will play a key part in supporting the implementation and assurance of Functional Safety (FS) activities at OT, ensuring compliance with the Rio Tinto D7 Functional Safety Standard, a critical standard for managing major hazards. With approximately 180 fixed plant-based Safety Instrumented Functions (SIFs) and 450 SIFs related to underground mobile equipment, you will contribute to ensuring these critical systems achieve the necessary risk reduction while minimizing spurious trips and enhancing operational efficiency. Additionally, you will support the development and execution of the Functional Safety Management Plan (FSMP), aligning lifecycle framework activities for each equipment type to maintain consistency and reliability in managing our critical safety assets. Your expertise will help improve the operational safety and performance of OT’s surface and underground operations.
What the role entails:
- Support the implementation of the overall risk management framework, focusing on Functional Safety (FS) aspects and ensuring compliance with Mongolian regulations, Rio Tinto and Oyu Tolgoi’s HSE relevant standards, codes of practice, and procedures.
- Collaborate with stakeholders, consultants, and relevant personnel to support and align resources with corporate strategies, build FS capability, develop workforce competency, and identify talent in critical areas.
- Manage Functional Safety consultants, ensuring effective resource allocation to meet operation and maintenance, project objectives while maintaining high standards of performance and compliance.
- Participate in engineering assignments, including technical studies, assessments, site investigations, and incident investigations, while ensuring risks are assessed and demonstrated to be As Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP) in alignment with tolerable risk criteria.
- Take responsibility for technical aspects of Functional Safety systems, including sensors, PLCs, final elements, and all related components in between. Validate the reliability of safety functions to confirm they meet their target Safety Integrity Level (SIL) and ensure the dependability of PLC and logic solver software.
- Maintain and optimize existing asset operation, employing advanced problem-solving techniques to address operational challenges and enhance asset reliability.
- Deliver results aligned with specific Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and lead investigations into equipment failures, developing mitigation strategies to enhance safety and performance.
- Ensure comprehensive risk assessments are completed, hazards are identified and communicated, and records are maintained in systems such as Archer or Enablon.
- Lead initiatives to drive energy and cost-saving projects, ensuring risks are demonstrated to ALARP through cost-benefit analysis while implementing recommendations for asset optimization and reliability improvement.
What you will need for this role
- A Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Automation, Control Systems, Mechatronics, Electronics, Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation, Reliability, Electromechanical Engineering, or a related field from an accredited institution (either of these qualifications is eligible).
- Must be experienced and capable in process and machinery systems design, installation, commissioning, and operations and maintenance aspect.
- Must have comprehensive understanding of electrical, mechanical, and software engineering principles for designing and maintaining automated processes.
- Good written and verbal communication skills in English and Mongolian.
- Must possess strong communication and teamwork skills
- Must be willing to demonstrate a positive attitude towards safety and lead by example.
- Would be an advantageous if: Familiarity with industrial process and machinery equipment, risk management frameworks, and risk identification and assessment methodologies (qualitative and quantitative). Knowledge of functional safety standards, such as IEC 61508, IEC 61511, IEC 62061, ISO 13849, and ISO 26262.
