Athlete Ambassadors of Rio Tinto meet with Oyu Tolgoi workers

Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia – Judoka P.Lkhamdegd and free-style wrestler G.Mandakhnaran, both members of the Mongolian Olympic team, are going to the London Olympics games-2012 sponsored by Rio Tinto, the “Golden Partner” of the Mongolian National Olympics Committee.

P.Lkhamdegd visited Oyu Tolgoi’s office in Ulaanbaatar, and G.Mandakhnaran visited the project’s site to meet with the company’s workers. The Oyu Tolgoi staff members had the opportunity to converse and take pictures with the athletes, and wished them success at the Olympic Games and to raise the Mongolian flag in London’s sky.

Oyu Tolgoi Senior Officer for Local Sustainable Development J.Chinggis: “we, the Oyu Tolgoi staff members, have waited for this moment for a long time. We were very excited to hear that an Olympic Ambassador Athlete was coming to visit us. We are very happy to have had the opportunity to meet this excellent athlete who is an inspiration to us. Hopefully, he absorbed the positive vibes and energy of the Oyu Tolgoi site. I believe he will get the gold medal at the Olympic Games and come back here to visit us; this would make us very happy”.

Supervisor of the Clean Water Transportation Department D.Bazarragchaa:today is a very nice day. I’m a big fan of wrestling, and a great supporter of G.Mandakhnaran. I’m so happy to have met an athlete that I respect and adore, and to have a photo with him, with his autograph. I never imagined that I would meet him. I’m so happy. Our company organized a very nice event for us”.

S.Enkhmaa, Safety Trainer at Shaft no.1:this event is very important. Every athlete’s accomplishment is important to us. Every Mongolian who loves sport was very glad that Rio Tinto decided to sponsor Mongolian athletes. I’m very excited to have met the athlete that will represent Mongolia in the Olympic Games. Without financial support, it is very hard, even for excellent athletes, to perform well. There are many cases where very good Mongolian athletes were not successful due to the lack of sponsors. We did not forget this. I believe the 2012 London Olympics Games will see a Mongolian becoming Champion. We, the Oyu Tolgoi staff members, are very happy that our company will provide the gold for the medals that can be awarded to the athletes that will represent Mongolia in the Olympic Games”.

Judoka P.Lkhamdegd was awarded Mongolia’s best athlete in 2011, and won gold medals at the Grand Prix championship held in Germany, at the World Championships held in the Netherlands and in the Czech Republic, as well as at the Chinggis Khaan World Championship held in Ulaanbaatar last year. G.Mandakhnaran won gold medals at the international and Asian championships held in Ulaanbaatar in 2011, and was awarded as Mongolia’s best athlete in 2010.
